Depending on the type of flight training you may be able to do most of your ground school at home using a home study course.

It's a good idea to conduct your ground training in conjunction with your flight training. This way your new learned information will make more sense when you actually see it working in the aircraft and vise versa. The knowledge test needs to be taken before the check ride so don't feel like you need to rush through the ground training. Ask your instructor on their recommendation for ground training and when you should have it completed.
